Three women made an emergency landing on a planet plagued with a fatal disease, but are captured by dictator Overdog. Adventurer Wolff goes there to rescue them and meets Niki, the only earthling left from a medical expedition. Combining their talents, they try to rescue the women.
I won't lie, it's a very low-budget movie with very dated effects. However, what lies beneath is a wonderful film with originality and a great cast.
Before any of you say "Mad Max/Road Warrior ripoff!!!" I've got news for you... Mad Max actually ripped THIS movie off! Well, an earlier draft of it anyway.
You see, in the mid-70's, the studio behind Spacehunter had a script originally called "Road Gangs" which played out very similar to the Mad Max films we know well. It was shown to many distributors, one of which was a certain Australian one... yes, you know the one. That one in particular, among others, passed it up.
Later on during development, suddenly Mad Max comes out. Hmm...
This forced the Road Gangs team to change the story (and name to Spacehunter) dramatically to avoid accusation of being a rip-off. So, as a result, we get this Mad Max/Han Solo hybrid of a hero on a plagued wasteland of a planet full of scavengers, mutations, and Road Warrior-esque fighting vehicles.
Despite how dodgey that might seem, it's actually a fun movie! I love watching it whenever I get the chance. Check it out for yourself.
