Platt-LePage Aircraft, overlooked by historians, and still dogged by some misconceptions about their helicopters.

The XR-1 late in it's career, you won't this image everywhere.

XR-1A, with Col. H. Frank Gregory shaking hands with Dr. W. Laurence LePage at Wright Field.

An interesting concept found by Hesham, possibly illustrating the PL-16:

The image is of a concept drawing of the PL-13 Helicopter, also used as a schematic for one of Haviland Platt's patents for a twin engine rotor drive system.

It was mainly used for publicity as a possible "this is coming postwar concept",  and wasn't a serious design.

The Air Corps prohibited Platt-LePage to issue any photos of their XR-1/XR-1A helicopters for publicity use, until the summer of '44 when the XR-1A was delivered to Wright Field. (Which is why there were so few photos published during WWII)

Is there a chance someone can repost higher res versions of these pics now that we can host them?

That picture is the rollout of the XR-1, with Frank Piasecki standing under, the rotor gearbox. (I have all the names of the personnel in the photo)
You can see Dr. LePage wearing the camera, and Haviland Platt, opposite the three ladies at the center.

Yes, I'm the person on Instagram that originally posted them.

You should see the color movie footage on YouTube that the National Aerospace Library has uploaded...

Hi everyone, great videos!

Platt-LePage, are you the same person as the user that I have obtained the photos from? If not, I am sorry for not giving due credit, I was unaware that you were the source! Excellent anyway and thank you for sharing them!

I'm one and the same, my other interest is New Orleans Absinthe. (In a related note, one of Marion Legendre's son-laws designed the tail rotor on the Higgins EB-1 Helicopter during WWII in New Orleans.)

One other video:

https://theageofaerospace.com/discovery/watch/ep8/ch1

This documentary on Frank Piasecki has a good section on Frank's work at Platt-LePage Aircraft, that I was able to help the film makers with historical info, and photos.

(There is a lot more to the story, that extends to Frank buying the Platt-LePage XR-1A postwar, and staying in-touch, and becoming friends with Dr. W. Laurence LePage for many years. This all went far beyond what could be included in the film.)
