VZ was used as a designation prefix for VTOL design studies including the Flying Jeep and other related lift-fan/shrouded rotor platforms in the late 1950s (Avrocar, Pawnee etc. ) as funded by the US Army.

VZ-8P (B) - "Airgeep II" - Piasecki PA-59H (Model 59H) AirGeep II
VZ-9/VZ-9-AV - "Avrocar" - Avro Canada Project Y / Project Y-2 (USAF: WS-606A / Project 1794 / Project Silver Bug)
VZ-10 - Lockheed V-4/XV-4 "Hummingbird" (redesignated in 1962)
VZ-11/VZ-11RY - Ryan XV-5 "Vertifan" (redesignated in 1962)
VZ-12 - unused - would've been the Hawker-Siddeley P.1127
.........If you notice sometimes the designaton is seen with additional letters after the number. These denote the company involved with the design.
AP = Aerophysics (division of Curtiss-Wright)
AV = Avro
CH = Chrysler
D/DA = Doak
P = Piasecki
RY = Ryan
Thanks for the suffix key at the bottom. I had no idea what those meant but now it looks so obvious. With that could we safely assume that the others carried these too? Or was this a practice adopted later in the program's life?
