It has an old Scorpion body on a tractor frame. It's been years when I saw it .....Awe...damn ! IT"S UGLY !

So that probably concludes its place of origin being the US. Unfortunately that doesn't help much...

Yes, it's American. Another hint: it was downed in a mid-air collision, resulting in the death of the other aircraft's pilot, who was also a friend of the pilot of this mystery aircraft.
