Just for fun....Greek and Roman Mythology

i know a fair bit about Greek and Roman Mythology so I decided to share....

Achilles - The mightiest of Greek Demi-gods who fought in the Trojan war

Aesculapius - The Roman god of medicine and healing

Alcyoneus - the eldest of the Giants born to Gaia, Destined to fight Pluto

Anaklusmos - Riptide, given to Hercules by a Hesperide, when Hercules faild to defeat Lados the protector of the Golden Apples

Argonauts - a band of Greek heros who accompanied Jason on his quest to find the Golden Fleece, Their name comes from their ship, The Argo, which was named after its builder, Argus.

Augury - a sign of something coming, an omen; the practice of divining the future

Aurae - wind sprit

Basilisk - snake, literaly 'little crown'

Bellerophon - a Greek Demi-god, son of Poseidon, who defeated monsters while riding Pegasus

Bellona - Roman Goddess of War

Byzantium - The Eastern Empire that lasted another 1,000 years after Rome fell, under Greek influence

Celestial Bronze - Rare metal deadly to monsters.

Centaur - a race of creatures that is half Human, half horse

Cerberus - the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld

Ceres - Roman Goddess of Agriculture

Charon - The ferryman of Hades who carries the souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron, which divide the world of the living from the world of the dead.

Cyclops (Cyclopes) - a member of a Primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of his or her forehead

XD, Chimera is a daughter of Gaia and is the mother of all monsters like Kampe and Drakons

Elysium - the final resting place of souls of the heroic and the virtuous in the Underworld

Erbos - a place of darkness between Earth and Hades

Faun - a roman forest God, part goat and part man.

Fields of Asphodel - the section of the Underworld where the souls of people wo lived lives of equal good and evil rest

Fields of Punishment - the section of the Underworld where evil souls are eternally tourtured

Fortuna - the Roman goddess of fortune and good luck

Gaia - the Earth goddess; Mother of Titans, Giants, Cyclopes and other monsters

Gegenes - earthborn monsters

Gorgons - three monserous sisters (Stheno, Euryale and Medusa) who have hair of living, venomous snakes; Medusa's eyes can turn the beholder to stone

Harpy - A winged female creature that snatches things

Hercules - the Roman equivalent of Heacles; the son of Jupiter and Alcmene, who was born with great strength

Hyperboreans - powerful norther giants

Iris - the rainbow goddess

Juno - Roman goddess of women, marriage and fertility; sister and wife of jupiter; Mother of Mars

Jupiter - Roman king of the gods

Karpoi - Grain spirits

Laistrygonians - tall cannibals from the north

Lar (Lares, pl) - House god, ancestral spirit

Lupa - The sacred Roman she-wolf that nursed the founding twins Romulus and Remus

Mars - Roman god of war; also called Mars Ultor. Patron of the empiure; divine father of Romulus and Remus

Minerva - Roman goddess of wisdom

This topic would be much more interesting if it was the mythology behind the name for an aerospace project. For example, Project Nike was named for the Greek goddess who personified victory who was also known as the Winged Goddess of Victory. Her Roman equivalent was Victoria.

ooooooookkkkk then, i was just sharing info, and if you didn't read correctly this is the off-topic tread and doesn't have to involve any sort of aerospace aspects

this one has nothing to do with Aerospace but made me laugh when i read the Description of its name

and its spelt 'Kronos' not 'Cronos' and i'm prety sure the Titan lord isn't a god of agriculture
