Last Sunday I was in my bedroom and what sounded like a Comanche was coming over! It was in fact one of the local air ambulances. It sounded quite quiet but with a whine, which was the high-RPM of the fenestron anti-torque system.

It did in fact land only a few hundred meters from my house. Shortly later it took-off, went, then came back and landed again, before taking-off again. So I got two opportunities for photos - and some low-level ones at that...

... I did get a few pics, and later identified the helicopter as a Eurocopter EC135, as East Anglian Air Ambulance (my local division) operate two of them. This is probably my first time in real-life that I have ever heard the fenestron. It sounded absolutely awesome, and just like that of the Comanche!

Really great pictures, Flyboy!!

Yeah, I love the sound of a Fenestron. I remember the first time I heard one was on an Aerospatiale HH-65C Dolphin. I don't know what you heard on the EC-135, as I imagine it'd be lower with the irregular blade spacing, but this thing sounded like something from Star Wars! biggrin

Thanks Stingray!

All I know is that the fenestron on this EC135 sounded very similar to the Comanche's. It sounded like it had a really high-RPM, compared to conventional tail rotors, almost sounding like a turbine engine.

Notice in the fifth photo along that a pigeon got caught in my shot! I think it got scared and took-off as the helicopter was setting off for the second time.
