Although Avro (A. V. Roe) Aircraft is best known for its fixed wing designs, the company was also involved in autogyros (as the main British outlet for Cierva, see separate topic) and later on in an array of unbuilt VTOL and helicopter type designs. Here are those that have been documented (thanks to hesham for locating the initial documents).

NOTE: the images shown next to the descriptions are also clickable in larger format at the end of the post.

  • AVRO 724 PROJECT Y (1953) tn-869882
    Alternative to Avro Canada Avrocar flying disc.
    Tail-standing VTOL. 2x R-R RB106.
    Span 24, Length 37.

 

  • AVRO 749 (1958) tn-869883
    VTOL 40-passenger transport to BEA specification
    8x scaled R-R RB145.
    Span 77.14, Length 75, Height 28, AUW 71,500lb.

 

  • AVRO 752 (1958) tn-869884
    VTOL Assault aircraft to carry 20 troops.
    6x NGTE engines. AUW 6,000lb.

 

  • AVRO 763 (1958)tn-869885
    VTOL fan-lift Jeep.
    2xR-R RB.153.Span 24.5, Length 26.75, AUW 8,500lb.

 

  • AVRO 765 (1959) tn-869886
    VTOL Fan-lift fighter. 2x R-R RB.153.
    Span 21, Length 41.3, AUW 13,500lb.
  • AVRO 769 (1959)
    VTOL weapons system based on the Vulcan.
  • AVRO 803 (1966) tn-869887
    VTOL transport with folding Control Circulation Rotors (CCR).
    Span 74.5(rotors stowed), Length 90.5, Height 26.35.
  • AVRO 804 (1966) tn-869888
    Tilt-wing short range transport.
    Span 100, Length98.75, Height 32.
  • AVRO 807-01 (1967)
    VTOL Wide speed range a/c using CCR for executive transport.
    R-R Scaled Spey + 2x RB172. Span 39, Length 43.75, Height 13.25.
  • AVRO 807-02 (1967)
    As above for Aircrew Rescue duties.

  • AVRO 807-03 (1967) tn-869889
    As above as an attack aircraft.
    R-R Spey 512 + 2x RB162. Span 35, Length 38, Height 11.7.
  • AVRO 809 (1968)
    VTOL high wing tandem-seat twin CCR with central engine.
    Proof of concept aircraft for Type 810 100-seat transport.

    VTOL Battlefield aircraft. Single CCR.
  • AVRO 815 (1970)
    Flying crane using CCR system. No work done & Type no. re-used.

Just realized I'd misplaced the picture for the Avro 811, placing it next to the Avro 810 text. I've fixed it, and now both types are there and correctly placed.

I'm enclosing below an extra picture of the 810 project (which became known as the Hawker Siddeley HS.810).

So what happened to the Avrocar to get it canned? I know it had some problems during the test flight but I was hoping for specifics........
