Development
China has developed and placed in production a new Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) called the ZBD2000. The troop carrier version is normally referred to as the ZBD-05 while the 105 mm direct fire version is referred to as the ZTD-05.This appears to have very similar capabilities to the US Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) that is currently being developed by General Dynamics Land Systems to meet the requirements of the US Marine Corps. In recent years the People's Liberation Army has placed increased emphasis on enhancing its amphibious capabilities. This has included improving the amphibious characteristics of its existing light armoured vehicles by the installation of additional buoyancy aids and mounting powerful outboard motors at the rear to increase water speed. A typical example of the latter is the WZ501 IFV covered in a separate entry in Jane's Armour and Artillery. The ZBD series of amphibious assault vehicles made their first public appearance during a major military parade held in Beijing in October 2009.Two versions were displayed, the ZBD-05 amphibious infantry combat vehicle from the 1st Marine Corps Brigade and the ZTD-05 105 mm direct-fire version from the 1st Division of the 1st Group Army.It is understood that this vehicle is manufactured by the Hunan Jianglu Machinery Group that is part of China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).It has been estimated that about 600 of these ZBD-2000 series of amphibious vehicles will be built. There have also been reports of an earlier ZBD-04 amphibious assault vehicle with a similar two-person turret armed with

Description
The hull and turret of the ZBD series are constructed of all-welded armour which provides the crew with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. At this stage it is not known whether the armour is of the welded aluminium or welded steel type. In the ZBD-05 amphibious infantry combat vehicle the driver is seated at the front left with the diesel power pack to the right, two-person turret in the centre and the troop compartment at the rear. The driver has a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear which can be locked in the vertical position with at least three day periscopes providing observation to the frontal arc. The middle one can be replaced by a passive periscope for driving at night. There appears to be another two crew positions to the immediate rear of the driver's position, one behind the other, with each of these being provided with a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear. The two-person turret is in the centre with commander and gunner being provided with periscopes and a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the front.Main armament is a 30 mm dual-feed cannon that is fitted to a number of other Chinese AFV with a 7.62 mm Machine Gun (MG) being mounted coaxial.Mounted on either side of the turret is a single rail launcher for the latest version of the Red Arrow 73 ATGW. A bank of four electrically operated smoke grenades are fitted either side of the turret.
